Small Animal Vet – Cumbria

Thrive in a supportive, award-winning team while enjoying a fantastic work-life balance, stunning scenery, and endless outdoor adventures.

This fiercely independent, award-winning practice is built on a commitment to providing exceptional veterinary care with a supportive, collaborative spirit.

My client is looking for a small animal vet to join its 27-vet team. Whether you’re a new graduate just starting out or a seasoned professional seeking development, you’ll benefit from mentorship, knowledge sharing, and a culture that empowers you to reach your full potential. The average tenure of vets is currently an impressive 11 years, a testament to the supportive environment. With certificate holders in surgery, medicine, emergency and critical care, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, and exotics, there’s always someone to offer a helping hand or discuss cases. Regular clinical meetings provide an excellent opportunity to gather over a meal, socialise, and share ideas for improving our services.

The practice boasts excellent purpose-built facilities, including top-end video endoscopy, high-resolution ultrasound scanning, class IV laser, Tonovet tonometer, and dental radiography. This allows for comprehensive in-house and second-opinion services.

New graduates are never left to work sole charge and start with 30-minute consults. Paired with one of five VetGDP advisors, new graduates receive tailored mentorship to match their interests and career goals. The large team’s knowledge and support, combined with a diverse caseload, will challenge and develop your skills from day one.

Vets work a 4-day week (8.30-6.30) with a balanced share of consulting and operating duties. The rota is designed so vets never have to work a full weekend, sharing weekend nights with other vets to ensure support and collaboration. After a night on call, vets receive a half day off, and after a weekend on call, a full day off. Vets work just 1:8 weeknights, with a dedicated RVN working until 10.30 pm to triage calls and look after inpatients. New graduates are paired with an experienced vet on the OOH rota, ensuring ongoing support to build skills and gain confidence.

They are a tight-knit team that loves to have fun together. With a team of 90, there’s always something organised, from dog walks to pub nights. The practice also sponsors local sports teams and participates in community events, fostering a strong bond with the local community.

The location couldn't be more appealing situated in a  World Heritage Site, offering breathtaking views and endless outdoor adventures. From hiking to road, gravel, and mountain biking, sailing, paddle boarding, windsurfing, kayaking, rock climbing, and fell running, the area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
